The history of Autogrow manufacturing electric garden products and propagators can be traced back to 1961, when the business was established in Blyth, Northumberland, England manufacturing electric garden products, injection mouldings and vacuum forming with associated tool making facilities.
Over the years the business expanded to include blow moulding of bottles and similar products in addition to the original product range of propagators and associated garden product. This necessitated a move to premises which were previously occupied by Coutaulds and the formation of a separate business Audus Noble Ltd of which Autogrow Ltd were a wholly owned subsidiary.
Novomec Controls Ltd manufactured a range of instantaneous shower pressure switches and sensing controls, injection moulding and tool making and Audus Noble Ltd were involved with subcontract injection mouldings and mould making. Due to the seasonality of shower production Novomec Controls Ltd were looking for a contra-season product range and at that time Audus Noble Ltd were looking for a partner to manufacture and market their garden products. In 1982 Novomec Controls Ltd commenced production and marketing of the electric propagators under a licence agreement and later in 1986 purchased the Autogrow Ltd garden product assets, trade mark and intellectual property whilst continuing the close working relationship for the supply of mouldings.
Novomec expanded manufacturing with the acquisition of an injection moulding company and also a vacuum forming business, where the Novomec Group had several sub manufacturing divisions, enabling manufacturing to be basically self sufficient utilising some outside contract works only. The Autogrow Ltd product range was redesigned to reflect current market conditions together with improved manufacturing procedures. Sales agents and distributors were appointed and Autogrow Ltd were able to undertake totally the manufacture of the electric garden products, with the quality range of electric propagators being sold within the UK and also into Europe. As time went by the advent of low cost product of lower quality being marketed through national DIY stores seriously reduced the market share of Autogrow Ltd and although wholesale supplies were continued, exhibiting at some shows both in the UK and in Europe, sales interest was also maintained through advertising for mail order supplies.
Autogrow Ltd is now a totally separate business again which will continue the manufacture of quality garden products and associated garden products, suitable for all the amateur, enthusiastic or professional gardeners. We intend to continue the manufacture of quality electric propagators, electric soil warming cables and temperature thermostatic controls ourselves, with quality being maintained, and also offering quality compatible product items.
